2014 Bio: After graduating from El Cap in 1964, I went to work 2 weeks later at a Chinese Restaurant, and then a 100 year old Historic Restaurant in San Diego. I lived and worked with my friend Cathie Doran, who also went to El Cap. I met my husband of 48 yrs in 1965, as he was being discharged from the Navy. We moved to his hometown of Monterey, California. We were married in July 1966. We had no children. I started working for AT&T in 1968 as a Long Distance operator, and worked my way up to a Communication Technician, before I retired in 2002. My husband worked in the Automobile business, and we also opened a Donut Shop from 1970-1975. After we retired we went on the road in our Motorhome for a couple years. We found a nice brick home in Springfield, Missouri, where some of his family lives. But after 3 yrs we just couldn’t handle the severe weather. So we checked out Oregon, and loved the beauty of the state. We found a small adult community of about 150 homes, nestled on a mountainside in Canyonville, Oregon. (Pop 1500) So we bought a home, and moved here in 2007. (And we love it.) My Mom who will be 92 yrs old this year, still lives in El Cajon, as well as my youngest sister, and her family.

Family: Husband of 49 years, Ray. Four children; Scott 37, Eric deceased, Kris 34, and Marcus 29.
Hobbies: Haven't had time for many but am getting back to the art I once did and also to the family genealogy that started in 1966. Also am quite fond of
driving my 50th. Anniversary Thunderbird. Oh, also there is two acres of garden that I dabble at also....
Pets: Two standard poodles that run this operation, two parrots who also think they runs this place and two cats...ah ya...they also think they run this place....the cat smacked the dogs and the parrot bit both the dogs and the cats, so guess the parrots rule.....
Bucket List: I don't have a bucket list....have seen too much of the "bucket" having done four hospice stints for people I dearly loved....so have seen the "bucket" up close and personal and really would rather just live day to day with what I love...my husband, animals, and home.
Bucket List
(completed items):
My list will be done when I "kick that bucket" with honor and dignity.
2014 Bio: My story is rather short and sweet...my husband and my children. I am married to my very own "Dirty Harry". He was with the San Diego Police
Dept. for 25 years and a detective most of that time working Homicide, Robbery, Vice, Training and Criminal Intelligence. He was sent to the
F.B.I academy and trained in the world of organized crime. I am his support staff. After retiring, he spent another 17 years teaching at Miramar College. While he did all of this, I raised our four children.
For those of you that have raised a lot of children, I don't have to say much...for those of you that have not...it is a hell of a lot of work. They all graduated with honors from college...three S.D.S.U and one U.C.S.D. They never did drugs or got into trouble. They are all good people with good jobs. I consider them my greatest accomplishment, my life and my story.......

In 2012 I got the urge to tie dye, and looked into how things are done these days. Boy has it changed (at least from what I used to do ca 1969). I had so much fun learning new techniques that I actually started an online shop: myinnerhippie.biz aka myinnerhippie.etsy.com Come check it out! Last year I packed up and put my house on the market, and headed to Arizona to be closer to my daughter. I intended to lived with my dog and 2 cats in my small motor home for just a few months, until my house sold, and then I would buy a home. It took 6 months to sell the house, and by then it was winter. I was enjoying the desert so much, I decided to play Snow Bird until spring. I have since bought a home in Payson, AZ and am loving it!

We left the El Cap '64 2004 reunion early to visit Portland OR, a city with vibes similar to Austin but a more temperate climate. Steve moved to Austin in October 2005 and Betty followed in March 2006 after selling our house and marrying off our son.
Steve works for Triad Speakers a manufacturer of high performance home audio speakers. He feels lucky to love his work.
Betty started a dressmaking and alterations business and set about enjoying the rich fiber art world of Portland.
In 2010, Steve, a life long gym rat, had a heart attack leading to quadruple bypass surgery and cardio rehab.
In 2011 as we began to recover, although the economy had not, Betty fell and broke her hip. Recovery required two surgeries and much rehab.
Now, in 2014, we are both doing well: active, healthy and grateful to be alive.
We are curious as to what the next chapter will bring our way.

2014 Bio: I went to San Diego State for 5 semesters before dropping out to join the Air Force in February ‘67. Before I was in a year they sent me to Rochester Institute of Technology in New York to finish my BS degree. Later the Air Force also sent me back to get my Master’s degree. Approximately the last half of my Air Force career was spent working on very interesting classified satellite reconnaissance programs and I wound up retiring in 1989 as a Lt Col at Vandenberg AFB. I continue to support the Air Force and work on satellite launches as an engineering manager at Vandenberg AFB for The Aerospace Corporation. I still enjoy my work and the excitement of space launch, but am expecting to retire for good fairly soon.
My wife and I were blessed to have two great children. Our son died of cancer at age 18 but our daughter, husband and their children live very close so we get to see and spoil the grandkids quite often. In addition to work and family I am very involved in Church and serve as an elder.

During that time I graduated from Jamestown Business College, Jamestown Community College, Buffalo State College & received a Master’s Degree in Social Work from the NY State University at Buffalo. In 2000 we moved to S.C. which is as close to S. Diego weather on the East Coast as possible. I get home every few years & we stay with my best friend from Jr. & HS, Joyce Boston Walters. Coy Owens

Status: Deceased Private Profile: No No Profile Created
Spouse/Partner: Coleen

2014 Bio: Coy Lee Owens
Submitted by Coleen Conley Owens, class of ‘66
For a couple of years, after high school, Coy worked as a welder at American Electric in El Cajon. They made bombs during the View Nam era.
Some of his best memories (and funniest stories) were from sharing an apartment for a couple of years with Larry Wilmers, Chuck Bixby, George Cosgrove, Bill Riding and others.
One story I remember is that Chuck Bixby won “Customer of the Year” from the local liquor store ~ he was only 19!
Coy and I were married January ’67.
Rather than getting drafted, Coy & his brother, Bob, joined the US Navy Reserves. They were both assigned to submarines & were on West-Pac at the same time. Seeing the world on Uncle Sam’s dime wasn’t his best vacation. But, the GI Education bill certainly helped with college. He completed his BS in education from San Diego State University. He started teaching (5 different subjects) at Granite Hills High School in 1973 ~ the year our daughter was born. While teaching full time and coaching freshman football, he continued his education at Azusa Pacific and obtained a Master’s degree in 1975 ~ the year our son was born. (Bob had convinced our kids that he taught Coy everything he knew. They still think Uncle Bob is a genius.)
After a couple years of teaching driver’s education, health, social living & PE, he finally got to be a full time PE teacher ~ his dream since he was 17 years old. He always coached, too. In the early years, football ~ all 3 levels. And varsity wrestling was his love, his favorite sport. Teaching and coaching was his ‘dream’ job. He loved teasing and interacting with the students. In the 90’s he started coaching Girls Volleyball ~ it was totally different than coaching any boys sports. Girls cry if you look at them cross-eyed, let alone if you criticize them. He once told me that he thought he said, “I’m Sorry” a million times to girls, but rarely needed to apologize to boys. Becoming the athletic director at Granite Hills was a lifetime goal that he achieved in the ‘80’s. He never wanted to be an administrator because you lose contact with the good kids. Administrators mostly deal with difficult kids.
When Coy was 34 years old, Kaiser diagnosed him with adult asthma & treated it for 5 years by masking the symptoms with prednisone. On his 40th birthday he had a lung removed, because a few days before, his new doctor did a simple test that showed tumors in his bronchial tubes.
At that point, we knew he would not live to a ripe old age, but would live to see our kids out of high school. We did the best vacations that time & money would allow. We decided that we were never going to have a cross word with each other again. We agreed that ‘the little things’ were never going to bug us again. Life was good ~ even if it wasn’t going to be forever.
At age 51, Coy lost his valiant battle with lung cancer in March, 1997.
I still like going to the Wrestling/Weight Room at Granite Hills High School to see the plaque that The El Cap Class of 1964 donated in his honor because the weight room was named after him. Also, if you are at the right angle on Granite Hills Drive, behind the school, you can see the word “Coy” in white shingles on the roof of the weight room. 
It’s hard to believe that he’s been in heaven over 17 years.

While Coy was busy spending 15 hour days at the gym and on the fields at Granite Hills HS, I was working in the printing industry. (Man ~ How that business has changed!) I started a small printing company in 1984 and worked until I retired in 2007.
Cristi, our daughter, (lives in El Cajon) had a son & daughter in 2004 and 2008. Our son, Coy & his sweet wife, Lana, have lived in Maui for 17 years. They are the proud parents of a 2 year old & just found out that they are having baby number 2 in April.
I get to see the grandkids here several times a week, but they’re very busy, with all their 6 year old & 10 year old activities. Maui isn’t such a bad place to visit a few times/year, but it’s not like you can stop in for a quick ‘grandkid fix’. Grandkids are the BEST!
It’s odd to visit my daughter, Cristi, at work ~ She’s a vice-principal secretary at El Cap. This summer, she sent me pictures of the boys & girls locker rooms (of our era) being torn down. Making room for bigger & better!

For the last couple years, my significant other is John Digenan. His family is from Lakeside & he & I went all through elementary school together. He only went to El Cap as a freshman & then to El Cajon for 3 years because the AG program was there.
He retired as a lineman this year; after working 38 years for SDG&E and 6 years in the union as a construction lineman. We’re busy planning vacations for the rest of our lives.

Mary Jane and Bill married their best friends directly out of high school and have been married for 49 years.
Bill is still working as a Private Investigator and has recently taken his bail business back and is now working as a Bail Agent for Bill Papenhausen Bail Bonds also known as All Hours Bail Bonds.
Over these past 49 years we have been bless with two daughters and two great son-in-laws and five gorgeous grandchildren. The grandchildren keep us busy on a day to day basis. As most grandparents agree they are the “apples of our eyes”. We look forward to them stopping by and visiting. Our grandchildren range in ages from 13 to 21.
We often find ourselves helping out the kids and their kids with a party at least once a month. Our kids live about two or three miles away and often stop in to visit the old folks.
We have lived in our present house for 36 years. We enjoy working in our house, taking care of our property and planting a garden for vegetables.
Often times we try to have a three day weekend and get away somewhere to just enjoy life. Our camping trips are staying in a 4+ star hotel.
We have been very lucky in life, with God blessing us with such an awesome family and good friends. We hope we can show everyone the love and thoughtfulness that God has shown us. We look forward to the 50 year reunion and hoping to have the time to talk and visit with everyone.

2014 Bio:
Leon and I celebrated 47 years of marriage last Feb. 3, 2014, and wrapped into those years are way too many tales to tell you at this time.

We still live in lakeside, in Chris’s family home on Westhill Road. Many years ago we sold our home in Flinn Springs and moved in with Mom as care giver until her death in 2004.

After 37 ½ years teaching PE, track coaching, biology, math, and whatever else they threw at him, Leon retired in 2006 from public education; mainly in the Grossmont Union High School District. Simultaneously with teaching, in 2000, we bought the historic Barrett Junction Café in Dulzura (Hiway 94 at Barrett Lake Rd.) and that occupies most of our time now. To our credit, in 2009 the Café was selected as California Small Business of the Year for District 40.

Our son, Leo is career ARMY, stationed at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina; married, two daughters, one in high school, one in college. And our daughter Joann teaches science at Valhalla High School in the Grossmont High School District (a chip off the old block), and busy raising a son and daughter in high school.

We are blessed to have raised two wonderful children who have turned into thriving, stable adults who still like us…and our grandkids actually want to be around us!

Mostly I am “domestic” traffic controller, keeping everything together; family, property, the business, community volunteer, and majorly Leon. In June I started my 2-year term as the President of the California Federation of Women’s Clubs, a huge women’s volunteer organization consisting of hundreds of community service clubs throughout California. I travel a lot within California and the U.S. interfacing with other state federations. I am also very involved with the Woman’s Club of Lakeside, and the Lakeside Historical Society. So please any time, share your family histories and send photos of the class reunion attendees, a memory CD, and any other information pertaining to the Class of ’64 for the Lakeside Historical Society archives: Lakeside Historical Society 9906 Maine Avenue, Lakeside, CA 92040. It’s a great asset for our community of Lakeside.

Leon had coronary bypass surgery in January, 2013, and I am very glad to report that everything is almost perfect at this time. When we are not shackled to the café, we tick items off our “bucket list” for travel; seem to be constantly cleaning out and giving away accumulated “stuff”; raise tomatoes and avocados for ourselves; pull the cats tail; hike the trails of San Diego County; and watch old movies on TV.

El Cap news to share:

Glenn Cook passed away April, 2012. His wife Rebecca, told me he had a heart attack at his home in Carlsbad, California. Glenn had a career as a railway conductor, with his main route from Salt Lake to Colorado Springs. He had no children.

We talk to Ron Vavra (track coach for El Cap and Grossmont College) yearly. Gail and Ron live in El Cajon and are doing fine. Also, it was good to see Jim Erkenbeck (football coach at El Cap) a few years ago at Ron Vavra’s induction to the El Cap Athletic Hall of Fame sponsored by the El Capitan Stadium Association. He looks great and was living at the La Costa Resort, North County.

Clark Staples (coach at El Cap and Santana High School) Passed away July, 2012. He had a long, distinguished teaching career in the Grossmont Union High School District, as well as his professional wrestling career. Shortly before his death, Clark wrote and published a book titled “Carpenter: A Personal Look at Professional Wrestling”, stories about his Pro wrestling escapades as alter ego Don Savage. Clark was a good friend, we spent a lot of time together and we think of him often.

Working at the Barrett Junction Café is a venue for us to see many El Cap classmates of all ages that are still roaming around the back country of San Diego on their Harley’s, or showing off their classic cars while stopping by the Café for a fish taco and beer—highway 94 is a favorite drive for car clubs.

Special thanks to the committee who worked on the class of ’64 -50 year reunion—I know it will be a fun and memorable event. It’s a lot of work and bless those who step up to the job.

Thanks for keeping the communication lines open—I will look forward to getting the memory CD and hear about what you all are doing.
Happy Trails,
Leon and Chris Herzog

2014 Bio:
Thank you for including me in your reunion; however, I left El Cap in ’63 to become a counselor at Grossmont High and thus was not around for your class graduation. I will not be attending your dinner or picnic, but wish you all the very best in your exciting get together. My contact information is correct and you may share it with anyone who would like to contact me. Some of you may have had me as a lower class English teacher when I was “Miss B”. Since leaving El Cap, I spent 4 years at GHS as a counselor, got married and left to have a baby in ’67. I remained at home, rearing my son and adopted daughter until they were school age when I returned to education in the Cajon Valley School District in a variety of positions—teaching, counseling, and administration. After retiring from the district in 2003, I supervised counseling interns at USD until 2011 when I finally retired. Now I occupy my time with an active life which includes painting, ushering at the Globe and Cygnet theaters, visiting my 2 grandchildren, gardening, daily exercise, and traveling. This is more than you really asked for when you asked for an update, but I leave you with his little caveat — the best is yet to come! Enjoy your time together.

Kindest regards,

Virginia (Ginny) Vanderway=

2014 Bio: When freshmen of the class of 1964 were beginners at El Capitan, I was also a beginner. It was my first year as a teacher. We had several English classes together. Some of my most enjoyable years were in American Studies classes with Paul DeKock and Dave Yount and you all. Later I went to Valhalla and retired in 1978.

During these years my children were also growing up. Judy is still a professional violinist. David is a famed flute maker and inventor of Straubinger flute pads. His twin sister Donna worked in the media center in the El Cajon school district. Tim, the youngest, retired from the city of El Cajon and is now spending most of his time as a caretaker for an old lady. ME!

My retirement years were spent happily in travel and volunteer jobs. My husband John and I spent many leisurely hours in our tiny motorhome. We first went to the eastern coast and back through Canada. Later we camped, we backpacked in the Sierras, and had reunions with relatives in Kansas and Florida. We went to a class on the southern coast of England where my husband studied water color painting.

John painted for the rest of his life. Twice his American teacher took the class to Italy. I went along with them to a wonderful two week trip in the Tuscany area. John’s health problems kept him home from then on. I went alone, twice to London and then with a high school friend to Germany where her son had a position in the American embassy.

In the US I spent weeks in Elderhotel classes and others with my grandson, a representative in Congress, and with my cousin who was president of a community college in Boston.

These minor volunteer tasks:
1. Taught sentence structure in a charter school
2. Played piano weekly in my Unitarian church
3. Helped in IGCC at UCSD (Institute of Global Conflict and Cooperation)
4. All the organizations my children were involved in
5. Beginner bridge class

I wrote and had published a memoir: “My Chunk of a Century”
